Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
